What is the Army PT Body Fat Calculator?
The Army PT Body Fat Calculator is a specific calculator designed to give an estimate of your body fat percentages using the official Army single site tape test. This calculation is a key part of the Army Fitness Test (AFT) and Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). Unlike other body fat calculators, the Army use a single site tape test to ensure accuracy, fairness and speed during testing in every unit.
The Army use body fat requirements to ensure all soldiers are fit enough to complete their tasks and reduce any risk of musculoskeletal injuries. The first step for every soldier is to complete the height and weight test. If a soldier is overweight according to the weight for height table they will need to complete the body fat test. Our calculator will replicate the process exactly to give you an accurate estimate.
Whether you're a recruit, active service or reserve you can quickly and easily check your body fat.
Why does the Army use body fat requirements?
The Army are not using body fat requirements to penalise soldiers. They're using them to ensure they're fit for duty. Having too much body fat can cause a reduction in endurance, slower response times and an increased risk of injury. Soldiers need to be able to move quickly, carry their equipment and be physically fit. Body composition is one of the factors that can tell you if a soldier is physically fit.
They're also using body fat requirements to ensure everyone is the same. If a soldier doesn't meet the requirements they may be flagged. They'll then need to complete the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) to help them reduce their body fat. This isn't to embarrass soldiers but to help them.
How to use the Army PT Body Fat Calculator
Using our calculator is simple and follows the same process.
- Gender and Age – The Army have different requirements for males and females. The body fat requirements depend on your age.
- Height and Weight – Enter your height (inches) and weight (lbs or kg — you can select your preferred unit).
- Neck – Just below the larynx (Adam's apple). The tape should be slightly slanted.
- Waist – Males – At the navel (belly button). Females – At the smallest point of the abdomen. Usually halfway between the navel and bottom of the breastbone.
- Female Hip Measurement – Where the gluteus muscles stick out the most.
- Click Calculate – Instantly see your body fat percentages and if you meet the requirements for your age and gender.
One Site Tape Test
Recently the Army moved to using a single site tape test. This has been done to make things easier. Male soldiers body fat is calculated using their abdominal circumference (waist) and weight. Female soldiers body fat is calculated using their abdominal circumference and weight in a different formula.
Male – % Body Fat = -26.97 - (0.12 x Weight (lbs)) + (1.99 x Abdomen (inches))
Female – % Body Fat = -9.15 - (0.015 x Weight (lbs)) + (1.27 x Abdomen (inches))
We've used these formulas in our calculator. Please note that this calculator is not for official use and only official measurements by trained professionals will be used.
How to Measure Accurately
It's important to measure accurately. If you're off by half an inch you could be off by a whole percentage. Here are some tips for accurate measurements.
- Neck – Stand relaxed with your head facing forward. The tape should be just below the larynx and slightly slanted. Don't pull your neck in.
- Waist (Male) – Stand up straight and exhale naturally. The tape should be around your abdomen at the navel. The tape should be level and tight but not causing compression.
- Waist (Female) – The tape should be around the smallest point of your abdomen. Usually halfway between the navel and bottom of the breastbone. The tape should be level. Don't pull your stomach in.
- Hip (Female) – Stand with your feet together. The tape should be around the largest point of your hips and bottom. Usually where your gluteus muscles stick out the most. The tape should be level.
Tips:
- Measure in the morning before eating or drinking.
- Wear light clothing or measure directly on your skin.
- Take 3 measurements and take an average.
- Ask someone else if possible.
Body Fat Requirements
Your maximum body fat percentages will depend on your age and gender. Below is a table of the current requirements.
| Age Group | Male Max Body Fat | Female Max Body Fat |
|---|---|---|
| 17-20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21-27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28-39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40+ | 26% | 36% |
If your body fat percentages are equal/less than the maximum you're meeting requirements. If you're over you may be flagged.
AFT Score Exemption (AD 2025-17)
There has been a big change in Army policy recently. If you score 465 points or more on the AFT with a minimum of 80 points in each event you're deemed to be meeting the Army body fat requirements and won't be flagged. This means if you're over the weight for height table but have a high AFT score you won't have to complete the tape test.
This is because muscular soldiers can be over the weight requirements but still be in great physical shape. If you're preparing for your AFT use our PFT Calculator to work out your score.
What happens if you don't meet requirements?
If you're over the body fat requirements you may be flagged. You'll then need to complete the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). This will help you reduce your body fat. If you're not making progress you could be administratively separated.
To avoid this you should regularly monitor your body fat. Use our calculator each month to track your progress. Adjust your training and nutrition. For a more detailed look into your fitness use our Army Body Fat Calculator (Old Multi Site Method) and FFMI Calculator.
Tips to improve your Army Body Fat
Don't panic if you're over the requirements. Body fat is one of the easiest fitness factors to improve. Try these tips.
- Focus on protein. Aim for 1.6-2.2g of protein per kg of body weight per day. This will help you retain muscle whilst losing fat. It will also keep you feeling fuller for longer.
- Complete 3-4 strength sessions. Complete compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bench press and rows. This will help you gain muscle and increase your resting metabolic rate. Muscle burns more calories than fat.
- Add some cardio. Complete 2-3 sessions of moderate intensity cardio such as running, cycling or rucking.
- Track your calories. You don't need to be too strict but tracking your food for a few weeks will help you to see where you're getting hidden calories from. Use our Calorie Calculator to work out what you need per day.
- Sleep 7-9 hours per night. Not sleeping will increase your cortisol and hunger hormones making it much harder to lose fat.
- Reduce your alcohol and processed foods. These are high in calories but offer very little nutritional value. Removing them often gives quick results.
- Measure every 2-4 weeks. Don't measure every day. Body fat doesn't change quickly and can become frustrating.
Common Mistakes
Sometimes even experienced soldiers make mistakes when completing their tape test.
- Measuring over clothes. The fabric will add extra bulk. Always measure on your skin.
- Too tight. The tape should be tight but not squishing your skin. This will make you look thinner than you actually are.
- Wrong area. Males waist should be at the navel. Female waist should be at the smallest point. Don't guess.
- Holding your breath. Exhale naturally before measuring your waist. Holding your breath can affect your results.
- Different time of day. Your waist can vary by an inch or more depending on the time of day. Always measure at the same time.
- Stretched tape. Old tapes can stretch which will give inaccurate results. Use a new flexible tape.
Army PT Body Fat Calculator vs Other Methods
There are many ways to estimate your body fat. The Army use the single site tape test.
- Skinfold Calipers – This uses calipers to measure fat at multiple sites. Can be more accurate than tape for some people. Requires trained professionals.
- Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA) – A small electric current is sent through your body. Quick and easy but results can vary depending on your hydration, food and time of day.
- DEXA Scan – This is the gold standard for body composition. Very accurate but can be expensive.
- Hydrostatic Weighing – Weighing underwater. Very accurate but requires specialist equipment.
- Navy Tape – Using your neck, waist and hip measurements. Similar to Army but different formulas.
The Army use this method as it's quick, cheap, requires little equipment and can be done anywhere. Whilst it's not the most accurate method it is consistent and fair. Our calculator will replicate the process so you can check your status from home.
