Army Height and Weight Standards Overview

Army height and weight standards are a series of measurements and maximum allowed weights for soldiers of different ages and heights. If your weight exceeds the listed value, it means that you have to take the body fat test (body fat percentage) in order to meet the army's height and weight standards.

Those requirements were developed in order to assure that all soldiers are physically fit and can perform their duties. Having excessive body fat decreases the soldiers' physical capabilities, increases the risk of injuries, and negatively impacts their health.

What Happens If You Exceed the Army Standards?

Depending on your weight and height, you might have to take the body fat test in order to bring your body fat percentage within the normal range for your age and gender. The body fat percentage test is most commonly done using the Army Body Fat Calculator (using the circumference method).

If your body fat percentage was found to be within the normal range, you'll most likely be found compliant with the army height and weight standards, even if your weight was above the standard for your height.

However, if your body fat percentage exceeds the standard, you might have to enter the remedial fitness program, in order to reduce your body fat and build muscle. This is necessary, because being overweight or obese is detrimental to one's health and decreases the physical performance of the soldiers.

In order to successfully complete the army remedial fitness program, you'll need to actively lose body fat and gain muscle. To do that, you can use some of our army fitness and nutrition calculators, such as the Bench Press Calculator, Calorie Calculator and FFMI Calculator.
