What is the Army Body Fat Calculator?
The Army Body Fat Calculator is a tool used to calculate the body fat percentage of an individual based on the official Army body fat calculation formula used by the United States Army. The calculation uses a combination of the individual's neck circumference, waist circumference, and (for females) hip circumference, in combination with the individual's height, to determine the body fat percentage. Many soldiers, recruits and active duty military members use a calculator like this to measure their body fat percentage in relation to the Army body fat standards.
The Army fitness standards ensure that all soldiers perform to a standard and maintain a healthy and fit physique, and for soldiers that fail to meet the standards, there may be consequences, including mandatory remedial training and potential separation from the Army. Having a reliable AFT calculator on hand is always a good idea.

Understanding the AFT Score Chart
The AFT score chart is a very important tool for soldiers and recruits in the Army. The AFT (Army Fitness Test) is the new fitness test for the Army that replaces the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test), and consists of a number of challenging events to test a soldier's upper and lower body strength and endurance, such as the 3-rep max deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, leg tuck, and a 2-mile run. Each of these events is scored based on a point system, and soldiers must score a certain amount of points to achieve good results on the test. The AFT score chart provides the point value for each of these events based on the soldier's performance level. The chart is very important in understanding the scoring mechanism and knowing what scores to aim for.
While the AFT score chart focuses on the scoring system for the fitness test, the Army body fat calculator is an essential tool in ensuring that soldiers are able to meet the required body fat percentages for the test.
Sample AFT Score Chart (for illustration)
| Event | Minimum Score | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| 3-Rep Max Deadlift | 120 points | 100 |
| Standing Power Throw | 4.5 meters | 100 |
| Hand-Release Push-Ups | 10 reps | 100 |
| Sprint-Drag-Carry | 3:00 min | 100 |
| Leg Tuck | 1 rep | 100 |
| 2-Mile Run | 21:00 min | 100 |
Note: This is an illustrative example. For details of a proper AFT score chart, please refer to official Army resources.
Army Body Fat Standards for Men and Women
The Army body fat standards vary based on age and gender. The maximum allowable body fat percentages are as follows (according to current Army regulations):
| Age Group | Male Max Body Fat % | Female Max Body Fat % |
|---|---|---|
| 17–20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21–27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28–39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40+ | 26% | 36% |
Meeting these body fat standards is a crucial requirement for all soldiers. Soldiers who do not meet these standards may be required to participate in a body composition assessment or undergo additional training to reduce their body fat percentage.
Why the Army Body Fat Calculator is important
Maintaining a healthy body fat percentage is not only important for passing a fitness test, but is also important for the overall health of the individual. Having too high of a body fat percentage can be detrimental to physical performance. The Army's body fat percentages ensure that all soldiers are performing to a standard and are at optimal health. Using the Army fitness calculator body fat can help individuals keep track of their body fat percentage over time, and can help them know how to maintain or improve their percentages, depending on their individual situation.
How the Army Body Fat Formula Works
The Army body fat formula uses the circumference measurements of a person's neck and waist to determine the approximate body fat percentage. For males, the formula follows:
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
And for females, the formula is:
Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387
Our calculator uses the same official formula employed in the Army height and weight calculator formula for accurate results.
